Cyber fraud in Agra: 11 lakh stolen via APK file sent under the guise of gas bill

The police commissioner has issued a warning to citizens to avoid clicking on unknown links or downloading suspicious files. The local cyber police station is currently investigating the incident and has urged the public to remain vigilant against such digital scams.
VIMARSHNAARAD TVA new and dangerous method of cyber fraud has emerged in Agra, where individuals are being targeted under the pretext of gas bill payments. According to Amar Ujala, a person was recently cheated of 11 lakh rupees through a deceptive scheme involving a fake gas bill update. The perpetrators sent the victim an APK file, which, once downloaded, granted the criminals full access to the victim's bank account.
According to the police, the fraud was executed with sophisticated precision. The victim received a message claiming that their gas bill was overdue. Upon clicking the link to pay the bill, the victim was prompted to download an APK file. This file was actually malware designed to compromise the security of the user's mobile device.
Following this incident, the Agra Police Commissioner has appealed to the public to remain cautious. He clarified that government and private companies do not use such suspicious files for bill payments. Citizens are advised never to download files or click links sent from unknown numbers.
Cyber experts note that even educated individuals are falling prey to these scammers because the methods used appear highly credible. Criminals often create a sense of urgency by threatening to disconnect gas services if immediate action is not taken. Driven by fear, victims often follow instructions without verifying the source.
Given the severity of the case, the cyber police station has been ordered to conduct a thorough investigation. The police team is currently tracking the bank accounts and mobile numbers used in the fraud. Officials emphasize that exercising extreme caution during digital transactions is the only effective defense.
Police have advised residents to visit their local gas agency office or use official applications if they receive any suspicious messages. It is crucial never to share bank details or OTPs with unknown individuals.
To protect against cybercrimes, users should keep their phone security features updated and disable the permission to install apps from unknown sources. The administration has urged the public to report any instances of cyber fraud to the national cybercrime helpline immediately to ensure timely action.
