Highway overbridge ramp collapses in Kanpur Dehat due to heavy rains, traffic diverted to service lane

A section of the Kanpur-Etawah highway overbridge ramp near Sakin Buzurg in Sikandra collapsed on Saturday evening. Continuous heavy rainfall is believed to be the primary cause of the incident. Authorities have closed the affected stretch and diverted all vehicular traffic to the service lane to ensure public safety and prevent accidents.

A significant incident occurred in the Sikandra region of Kanpur Dehat on Saturday evening when a portion of the Kanpur-Etawah highway overbridge ramp suddenly subsided. According to reports from Amar Ujala, the affected section has sunk by approximately 100 meters, causing alarm among commuters in the area.

Local administrative officials stated that the region has been experiencing persistent heavy rainfall for several days. It is suspected that waterlogging and subsequent soil erosion weakened the structural integrity of the overbridge ramp, leading to the collapse around 5:00 PM.

Upon receiving information about the incident, police and administrative teams promptly arrived at the scene. Prioritizing public safety, officials immediately closed the affected stretch of the highway to all traffic and installed barricades to prevent any potential accidents.

At present, all light and heavy vehicles traveling along the highway are being diverted through the service lane. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution and strictly follow the designated diversion routes to ensure smooth traffic flow.

A team of engineers has been summoned to the site to conduct a thorough assessment of the damaged section. No official timeline has been provided yet regarding when the repair work will be completed or when the main road will reopen.

Local residents noted that waterlogging had already been a persistent issue on several parts of the highway due to the ongoing rains. Following this incident, the administration is now preparing to conduct a comprehensive safety inspection of the entire route.

The situation is currently under control, and additional police personnel have been deployed to manage the traffic flow. The administration has requested the public to remain patient and utilize the alternative routes provided.
