Central Bureau of Narcotics seizes over 6.6 million psychotropic tablets under Operation Vajra 2.0

The Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) has seized 6.68 million psychotropic tablets on the Chandigarh-Baddi route following intelligence from its Madhya Pradesh unit. Under Operation Vajra 2.0, one individual was arrested and a truck used for transport was confiscated. Investigations revealed that batch numbers were erased from the packaging and the shipment was being transported without valid statutory documentation.

The Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) has achieved a significant breakthrough against the illegal trafficking of psychotropic substances. Acting on specific intelligence regarding the movement of a large consignment through the Punjab-Himachal Pradesh corridor, the CBN's Madhya Pradesh unit launched a strategic operation. A special preventive team maintained surveillance on the Chandigarh-Baddi interstate route on August 27-28, 2026.

During the operation, the team intercepted a suspicious SML Isuzu Sartaj truck registered in Uttar Pradesh. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 120 large cartons containing controlled psychotropic substances. The shipment included tablets of Alprazolam, Tramadol, Nitrazepam, and Clonazepam, totaling 6,679,980 units, all transported without invoices or e-way bills.

Preliminary investigations highlighted sophisticated methods used to evade regulatory oversight. Batch numbers, manufacturing dates, and expiry dates had been systematically erased from the blister strips and cartons. Furthermore, the packaging bore labels stating they were not for sale in Punjab or Haryana, indicating a deliberate attempt to conceal the illicit supply chain.

Following a 14-hour operation to document and seal the evidence, the entire consignment and the truck were seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. One suspect has been arrested in connection with the case. The CBN is currently conducting a deeper investigation to identify the manufacturers and the distribution network involved in this interstate racket.

According to the bureau, during the 2026 calendar year, the CBN has successfully registered 197 cases and arrested 272 individuals. The agency has also dismantled six clandestine laboratories and seized vast quantities of prohibited materials. The CBN reaffirmed its commitment to the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan' and stated that intelligence-based enforcement actions will continue.
