GIFT IFSC Emerges as a Robust International Banking Hub, Mobilizing Over $52 Billion via FCNR(B) Swaps

GIFT City IFSC has strengthened its position as a key international banking center. According to the IFSCA, International Banking Units have mobilized over $52.8 billion through RBI's swap facility. Additionally, $11.62 billion was raised through ECBs and $11.12 billion via bond listings, highlighting the center's growing role as a vital bridge for global capital into India.

GIFT IFSC is rapidly evolving into a prominent international banking hub. The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) reported that GIFT City is playing a significant role in meeting India's foreign exchange requirements. By August 31, 2026, 20 International Banking Units (IBUs) had secured approvals for $54.02 billion under the Reserve Bank of India's special swap facility for FCNR(B) deposits, with $52.82 billion already disbursed.

The utilization of this facility saw a sharp increase in the final weeks of August. This progress follows directives from the Union Finance Minister to public sector banks, encouraging them to leverage the financial ecosystem and infrastructure available at GIFT-IFSC. The initiative aims to streamline the process of raising funds from global jurisdictions.

The expansion of banking activities is not limited to the swap facility alone. Between April and August 2026, IBUs distributed $11.62 billion in External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs). Monthly ECB disbursements also recorded consistent growth, rising from $1.54 billion in April to $3.54 billion in August.

Furthermore, significant capital has been mobilized through bond listings on IFSC exchanges. Indian banks listed $11.12 billion in bonds during this period, with the majority issued in July and August. This demonstrates that GIFT-IFSC has become an effective platform for accessing international capital markets.

IFSCA Chairperson K. Rajaraman stated that this expansion is a testament to the depth and global orientation of GIFT City. He noted that the center is acting as an effective bridge between global capital sources and India's financial needs. Currently, it is being used to raise funds from various regions, including the US, UK, Mexico, West Asia, and Singapore.

GIFT-IFSC is a strategic project of the Government of India, regulated under the IFSCA Act, 2019. Its primary objective is to develop and regulate financial services and institutions within India. The center is also playing an active role in supporting the 'Viksit Bharat @2047' agenda, in line with the Prime Minister's vision.
