Dr. Jitendra Singh Emphasizes Integrated Approach for Coastal Development and Blue Economy
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated at a conference on coastal ecology and security that India's coastline should be viewed as an integrated space for ecology, economy, and security. He highlighted the importance of indigenous technologies and the Deep Ocean Mission in harnessing marine resources.

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, addressed a national conference on Coastal Ecology, Security, and Sustainability (CESS) 2026. He emphasized that India's coastal regions should be developed as an integrated space rather than being viewed in isolation.
The minister noted that India's 11,000 to 12,000-kilometer-long coastline holds immense potential for a 'blue economy'. He stated that balancing scientific knowledge with environmental sustainability is essential for leveraging marine resources.
Referring to the Deep Ocean Mission, Dr. Singh mentioned that India is moving towards self-reliance in exploring the unknown resources of the deep sea. He highlighted the recently launched indigenous research vessel 'ORV Sagar Manthan' as a significant step in this direction.
Robots and submersibles are being developed to explore the depths of the ocean. The minister stated that these technologies would open new economic opportunities in sectors such as metals, minerals, and fisheries.
Dr. Singh stressed the importance of the livelihoods of coastal communities. He said that the government's priority is to ensure the improvement of the living standards of coastal residents alongside resource development and environmental protection.
For coastal security, he emphasized the use of modern technology. He noted that emerging technologies like surveillance, communication, and remote sensing would be helpful in strengthening maritime security.
The conference was attended by various stakeholders, including experts from earth sciences, defense, and legal fields. Dr. Singh said this platform would help in developing a holistic approach to understanding coastal challenges.
He also mentioned the 'Swachh Sagar Surakshit Sagar' campaign. The minister stated that this campaign would continue from September 12 to 19, involving a pledge to keep the coasts clean through citizen participation.
In conclusion, he stated that a safe and prosperous coastal future could only be built through scientific research and practical action.
