PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping hold bilateral talks during BRICS Summit in New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The leaders welcomed progress in bilateral ties, emphasizing peace along the border and cooperation based on mutual respect, sensitivity, and interests. They also discussed addressing trade imbalances and enhancing cultural exchanges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a significant bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. This meeting served as an opportunity to highlight the continued progress in India-China relations since their previous discussion in Tianjin in August 2025.

During the talks, both leaders agreed that India and China should adopt a strategic and long-term perspective regarding their bilateral relationship. The Prime Minister clarified that differences should not be allowed to escalate into disputes. He identified three key pillars—mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest—as essential for guiding the relationship.

Emphasizing peace and stability in border areas as the foundation for development, the Prime Minister stressed the need to adhere to existing agreements. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to working toward a fair, rational, and mutually acceptable resolution to the border issue.

On the economic front, both sides discussed structural trade imbalances and supply chain challenges. They emphasized the need to address each other's concerns and facilitate meaningful, predictable market access.

To strengthen people-to-people ties, the leaders agreed to promote cultural exchanges and increase the movement of citizens. They acknowledged that both nations should continue to expand common ground to address regional and global challenges.

The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for China's support during India's BRICS presidency and its contribution to the success of the 2026 summit. This meeting is viewed as a positive step toward advancing diplomatic dialogue between the two nations.
