A historic memorandum of understanding regarding the distribution of Son river water was signed between Bihar and Jharkhand during a ceremony held in New Delhi. The event was attended by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil. This agreement resolves a water dispute that had been ongoing between the two states for approximately 25 years.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the agreement as a prime example of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Team Bharat' vision and cooperative federalism. He emphasized that when all states work together, any problem can be resolved. This marks the fourth major water agreement between various states this year, which is expected to boost irrigation and rural development.

The agreement will benefit a large population across Bihar's Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Arwal, Gaya, and Patna districts. These regions will now have access to sufficient water for irrigation and drinking purposes. Similarly, residents in Jharkhand's Palamu, Garhwa, and other areas will also find relief from water scarcity.

Both Chief Ministers expressed their gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister for resolving the Son river water issue. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the process of resolving long-pending water disputes through the Inter-State Council is progressing rapidly. Earlier this year, disputes related to the Narmada Award, the Yamuna water project, and the Kishau multi-purpose dam project were also settled.

This agreement will not only assist in better management of water resources but also promote the socio-economic development of rural areas in both states. Officials stated that this initiative will enable millions of farmers to receive timely water for their crops, which is expected to increase agricultural productivity.

Government officials believe that such dialogue and cooperation can resolve long-standing infrastructure and resource-related issues between various states in the country. This process is expected to continue in the future to further strengthen coordination between the states.
