UP Politics: Mayawati raises questions on EVMs, cites past opposition by BJP

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati has once again questioned the voting process using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). She emphasized that there should be no doubt in the minds of voters regarding the electoral process. Mayawati also recalled that during the Congress regime, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had also opposed the use of EVMs.

The issue of EVMs has once again gained momentum in Uttar Pradesh politics. BSP chief Mayawati has expressed her concerns regarding voting through electronic machines. She stated that transparency is paramount in a democracy and that there should be no room for doubt in the minds of voters concerning the election process.

In her statement, Mayawati referred to the past, noting that this is not a new issue. She reminded everyone that when the Congress party was in power, the Bharatiya Janata Party had also strongly opposed the use of EVMs. She stressed that democracy is strengthened only when everyone has faith in the electoral process.

The BSP supremo's statement comes at a time when various political parties are discussing electoral reforms. Mayawati has questioned the reliability of EVMs on several previous occasions and has advocated for a return to paper ballots.

Mayawati believes that the Election Commission should take concrete steps in this direction to maintain public trust. She added that any form of suspicion could be detrimental to the democratic framework.

Political analysts suggest that Mayawati's statement is intended to clarify her party's stance ahead of upcoming elections. She has been consistently raising this issue to communicate her position to the electorate.

However, the Election Commission has consistently maintained that EVMs are secure and tamper-proof. The commission asserts that the machines are entirely safe and that there is no possibility of any manipulation.

Following Mayawati's statement, the debate over EVMs versus paper ballots has reignited in political circles. Leaders from various parties are offering their own reactions to the matter.

According to the Amar Ujala report, Mayawati has clarified that her objective is solely to ensure transparency in the election process so that no voter is left with any doubts.
