The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken a firm stance on the incident of cruelty against a woman in the Banswara district of Rajasthan. Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports, the commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Rajasthan government and the Superintendent of Police of Banswara, given the gravity of the situation.

According to media reports, the incident occurred on September 1, 2026. It is alleged that the woman's husband and other relatives accused her of running away from home with another man. Following this, they reportedly cut her hair, beat her with sticks, and paraded her in public in a semi-naked state.

The matter came to public attention after a video of the incident went viral on social media. Media reports published on September 4, 2026, highlighted this inhumane behavior, prompting the commission to take suo motu action.

The commission stated that if the information provided in the media is accurate, it constitutes a serious violation of the victim's fundamental rights to life and dignity. Such incidents raise questions about law and order and human values in society.

In its notice, the commission specified that the concerned officials must submit a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. This report is expected to include the current status of the investigation and details regarding any compensation provided to the victim so far.

The NHRC expects prompt action in this case to ensure justice for the victim. The commission aims to ensure that strict legal action is taken against the perpetrators and that such incidents are not repeated in the future.

Currently, the administration is expected to initiate the investigation process. This initiative by the commission is seen as a significant step toward protecting the safety and dignity of women in the state.
