On the occasion of World Tourism Day 2026, India is set to highlight the role of digital transformation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the tourism sector. The theme for this year is 'Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,' focusing on making travel experiences more personalized and accessible through technology. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the sector contributed 5.22% to the GDP in 2023-24 and supported 84.6 million jobs.
At the central event held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat will launch several key initiatives. These include the 'National Digital Tourism Stack,' an open digital public infrastructure designed to make tourism services more reliable. Additionally, 'Dekho Apna Desh 2.0' will be launched to promote lesser-known destinations and ensure a more balanced distribution of tourist footfall.
India has expanded its e-visa facility to citizens of 172 countries, significantly simplifying international travel. Currently, approximately 78% of all visas are issued electronically, with 95% of applications processed within 72 hours. This digital progress makes India a more convenient destination for international travelers.
Tools like the 'Incredible India' digital platform and 'NIDHI+' are integrating the tourism ecosystem. Through NIDHI+, the registration and classification of tourism service providers are being conducted online, enhancing transparency and operational efficiency. A Memorandum of Understanding signed with Google India in June 2026 also aims to strengthen the digital promotion of Indian tourism through AI and data-driven insights.
The Ministry of Tourism is organizing various events across the country, including cultural programs and award ceremonies in Telangana. The Delhi government is also hosting a two-day festival titled 'Rang-Ras-Rooh' along the banks of the Yamuna. These events showcase India's cultural heritage and the diversity of its tourism offerings.
Tourism in India is no longer limited to travel; it has become a major source of livelihood and economic growth. The rising number of startups, particularly in Tier II and Tier III cities, is driving innovation in travel technology and rural tourism. Government initiatives like Swadesh Darshan 2.0 and PRASHAD are prioritizing infrastructure development at religious and cultural sites.
Ultimately, this day reflects India's commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By connecting tourism with communities, culture, and the environment, India is moving toward building an inclusive and sustainable tourism sector.
