Biometric Aadhaar authentication mandatory for subsidized LPG refills from October 1

The Ministry of Petroleum has announced that biometric Aadhaar authentication will be mandatory for subsidized domestic LPG refills starting October 1, 2026. Approximately 90 percent of consumers have already completed this process.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that biometric Aadhaar authentication (BAA) will be mandatory for subsidized domestic LPG refills starting October 1, 2026. The objective of this move is to ensure that the benefits of the subsidy reach only eligible families and to prevent its misuse.

According to the ministry, 27.43 crore active consumers have already completed the authentication, accounting for 89.9 percent of the total consumer base. Those who have already completed this process do not need to undergo authentication again.

Consumers can use several methods for authentication. It can be completed during delivery via the agent's mobile app, at the distributor's office, or from home using the OMC mobile apps (IndaneOilOne, HelloBPCL, HP Pay).

For consumers who do not wish to undergo biometric authentication, an alternative is available. They can opt out of the subsidy through digital channels. Such consumers will be supplied cylinders at the market price based on local availability without any subsidy.

The government had extended the deadline for completing this process several times. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have been running extensive outreach campaigns since October 2023. This includes sending crores of SMS and WhatsApp messages and organizing special camps.

To manage the subsidy burden, the government has made a provision of 30,000 crore rupees for the financial years 2025-26 and 2026-27. The ministry clarified that the purpose of this process is not to deprive any genuine family of LPG, but to make the subsidy distribution transparent.

For any assistance, consumers can contact the toll-free helpline number 1800 2333 555. The government has urged all consumers to complete their process before October 1 to avoid any disruptions in future refill bookings.
