The 43rd edition of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Commanders' Conference began in New Delhi on September 17, 2026. During the three-day event, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth engaged with ICG Director General Paramesh Sivamani and senior commanders to discuss critical issues related to national and maritime security.
In his address, the Minister of State for Defence commended the Indian Coast Guard for its role as a first responder during maritime crises. He noted that the force has played a vital role in saving lives at sea, regardless of nationality. He called upon the force to remain prepared for emerging security challenges by keeping pace with rapid technological advancements.
Highlighting the evolving nature of warfare, Mr. Seth emphasized the growing importance of networks, sensors, software, data, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and cyber capabilities. He urged the ICG to move beyond being mere users of technology and instead become co-creators by collaborating with start-ups, industry partners, and the DRDO.
Regarding self-reliance, the Minister clarified that 'Atmanirbharta' is not just about purchasing Indian goods; it is about developing solutions for Indian challenges and building capabilities that can meet global requirements. This approach embodies the vision of 'Make in India, Make for the World.'
Underlining the ICG's critical role in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, he noted that capabilities developed for maritime security also play a significant role in search and rescue, medical evacuation, and pollution control. He stressed the importance of strengthening India's maritime capabilities across the entire spectrum, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'MAHASAGAR' vision.
During the conference, ICG commanders will also interact with the Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani and Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan to foster inter-service cooperation. These discussions are expected to further the development, capacity building, and infrastructure expansion of the ICG.
The conference provides a platform for commanders to conduct a comprehensive review of operational readiness, logistics support, human resource development, and administrative initiatives from the past year. It also helps them identify key milestones necessary to protect maritime interests against the backdrop of evolving geopolitical dynamics.
