The story of 45-year-old Komaragiri Ankamma from Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, serves as a testament to resilience and success. Belonging to a Scheduled Tribe community, Ankamma began working as a waste picker alongside her parents during her childhood. Due to poverty and a lack of educational opportunities, she remained in this challenging profession for 25 years.

Life was far from easy for Ankamma. Despite working six days a week, her daily earnings remained between 150 and 200 rupees. Limited income and social discrimination made it difficult for her family to meet basic needs or save for emergencies.

The 'Swachhata Udyami Yojana' (SUY) of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment brought a significant transformation to her life. On June 19, 2023, she received assistance through the Navajeevan Institute as part of a five-member group project. The total cost of this project was nearly 5 million rupees, which included both loans and subsidies.

The impact of this government support on her income was immediate. According to official records, her monthly income increased from 8,000 rupees to 18,000 rupees after joining the scheme. She is now earning an additional 10,000 rupees per month.

Expressing her satisfaction, Ankamma stated that this additional income has significantly strengthened her family's financial security. She is now able to manage household expenses with ease and is also saving for future requirements.

This change is not merely financial; it has instilled a sense of confidence in Ankamma and her family. Her journey demonstrates that if waste pickers are provided with timely government assistance and resources, they can improve their livelihoods.

Ankamma's story serves as an inspiration for others struggling in adverse conditions. It also highlights the effectiveness of government schemes that are capable of bringing positive change to the lives of those at the bottom of the social ladder.
