Food safety department raids canteens at major Kanpur government hospitals, finds poor hygiene

The Food Safety and Drug Administration in Kanpur conducted surprise inspections at four major government hospitals. Canteens at Hallet, Dufferin, Kanshiram, and the Mother and Child Hospital were found to have significant hygiene issues, including drainage leaks. Officials collected food samples for testing, raising concerns about the quality of meals provided within these healthcare facilities.

The Food Safety and Drug Administration in Kanpur launched a significant inspection drive on Thursday, targeting the canteens of several prominent government hospitals. The operation covered the facilities at Hallet Hospital, Dufferin Hospital, Kanshiram Hospital, and the Upper India Mother and Child Hospital.

During the visit, the inspection team collected various food samples to evaluate their quality. These samples have been sent to a laboratory for rigorous testing to determine whether the food served to patients and their attendants meets the required safety standards.

Several irregularities were observed during the inspection process. The most concerning issue was the lack of cleanliness within the canteen premises. Furthermore, officials noted significant problems with the drainage systems, including active leakages.

Finding such levels of filth and mismanagement in a sensitive environment like a hospital highlights a concerning disregard for health standards. The department officials have documented these lapses and issued instructions to the operators to rectify the situation immediately.

According to reports from Amar Ujala, the primary objective of this action was to ensure food safety. There is a growing consensus that the hospital administration must also maintain regular oversight of these canteens to ensure that patient health is not compromised.

Legal action will be determined once the laboratory reports for the collected samples are finalized. If the food is found to be adulterated or in violation of safety norms, the canteen operators could face heavy fines or other punitive measures.

This surprise inspection serves as a warning to other healthcare centers in the city. The administration has reiterated that maintaining the purity and hygiene of food provided to patients remains a top priority, and similar checks will continue in the future.
