In a significant operation at Nhava Sheva port, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has intercepted a consignment of illegally imported firecrackers. Based on specific intelligence, the raid resulted in the recovery of approximately 10,000 kilograms of firecrackers, with an estimated market value of Rs 3 crore.

During the inspection, officials discovered that the container had been packed with bottles and wallpaper at the front to conceal the illicit cargo. However, a thorough search revealed a large quantity of 288 Gatling firecrackers hidden behind the declared goods.

The firecrackers and the cover cargo have been seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Under India's foreign trade policy, the import of firecrackers is prohibited. Such imports require valid authorization from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and mandatory licensing under the Explosives Rules.

In connection with this case, the DRI has arrested a key member of the syndicate. The accused is charged with planning the clandestine clearance of the illegal consignment from the port. He has been taken into custody under the Customs Act, and further interrogation is currently underway.

This operation highlights the DRI's continued vigilance against syndicates that attempt to import prohibited items through commercial channels by misdeclaring goods. The department remains active in thwarting such illicit activities.

Officials have clarified that any imports violating safety standards and legal provisions will not be tolerated. The scope of the investigation is being expanded to identify other individuals involved in the smuggling operation.

This seizure is not only a strike against illegal trade but is also significant from a safety perspective, as the storage and transport of unlicensed firecrackers pose substantial risks.
