Indian Parliamentary Delegation Participates in 153rd IPU Assembly in Tanzania

Led by Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh, the Indian parliamentary delegation is attending the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania. The members participated in sessions covering health, geopolitics, and women's empowerment, while holding bilateral meetings with international counterparts.

A parliamentary delegation from India, led by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, is currently attending the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania. The event was formally inaugurated by the President of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan. Several senior members of the Indian delegation attended the opening ceremony and held discussions with various ministers, including the Foreign Minister of Tanzania.

On the first day of the assembly, October 5, 2026, Indian parliamentarians actively participated in various committees and forums. Lok Sabha MP Dr. Sanjay Varma attended sessions of the health-related committee. Meanwhile, in the Asia-Pacific geopolitical group meetings, Smt. Aparajita Sarangi briefed members on the recent initiatives and activities of the IPU Executive Committee.

India's representation was also prominent at the Forum of Women Parliamentarians. Smt. Kamaljeet Sehrawat participated in discussions regarding parliamentary strategies to promote inclusive social development and the empowerment of persons with disabilities. Additionally, Smt. Bijuli Kalita Medhi contributed to the session focused on women's leadership.

Regarding efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism, Smt. Lata Wankhede attended the board meeting of the IPU's High-Level Advisory Group. Furthermore, Dr. Sasmit Patra participated in the meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly.

To strengthen international cooperation, the delegation held several bilateral meetings. Deputy Chairman Harivansh met with the Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, Milton Dick, and the Speaker of the Parliament of Tanzania, Musa Azan Zungu. These discussions focused on matters of mutual interest.

This assembly serves as a vital platform for global parliamentary dialogue, where India continues to present its perspectives. Other members of the delegation, including Shri Anurag Singh Thakur and Shri N.K. Premachandran, are also actively contributing to the various sessions throughout the assembly.
