The 18th meeting of the heads of intellectual property offices of BRICS nations was held in New Delhi. During the three-day event, member countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation for innovation and economic growth. The meeting adopted updated operational guidelines and discussed the preservation of traditional knowledge and the streamlining of patent examination processes.

The 18th meeting of the heads of Intellectual Property (IP) offices of BRICS nations took place in New Delhi. Organized by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the three-day event was held from September 1 to 3, 2026. Approximately 35 representatives participated through both physical and virtual modes.

During the deliberations, member countries underscored the significance of intellectual property as a key driver for global innovation and economic development. Aligned with the theme of India's BRICS chairmanship, 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,' representatives agreed on fostering technical and economic progress through robust IP frameworks.

To make cooperation more result-oriented, the meeting adopted updated operational guidelines. These guidelines aim to promote cross-border innovation and strengthen global IP standards. Furthermore, the participants placed significant emphasis on the protection and preservation of traditional knowledge and traditional systems of medicine.

Progress made toward streamlining patent examination processes and reducing pendency was also reviewed. Findings related to patent analytics and the commercialization of Geographical Indications (GI) were accepted to enhance efficiency within BRICS markets.

Discussions were concluded on several new projects to deepen institutional engagement. These initiatives include a Fintech Innovation Monitor, an Industrial Property Commercialization Forum, and an IP awareness series. Additionally, the development of a manual for patent documentation and information resources was discussed.

Representatives emphasized the importance of coordination mechanisms and periodic reviews to ensure the effective implementation of projects. The Office of the CGPDTM received appreciation for the successful organization of the meeting. Hosting this annual event was noted as a reflection of India's growing influence in the global intellectual property landscape.
