Lack of Referral Policy in Lucknow: Patients Referred Without Checking Bed Availability
Although a referral policy exists in Lucknow to send critical patients to higher centers, the infrastructure to implement it remains absent. In 90 percent of cases, patients are referred without verifying bed availability, forcing them to struggle for treatment elsewhere.
VIMARSHNAARAD TVA major systemic failure has emerged regarding the referral of critical patients within Lucknow's healthcare system. Although the administration had formulated a referral policy to send patients to larger hospitals for better treatment, the ground reality is quite different. The infrastructure required to implement this policy has not been established yet.
According to a report by Vineet Chaturvedi, there are significant flaws in the current patient referral process. In nearly 90 percent of cases, hospitals do not even verify if a bed is vacant at the destination hospital before referring the patient. As a result, when patients arrive at the referred hospital, they face immense hardship due to the unavailability of beds.
This situation is proving to be extremely distressing for patients and their families. Even after reaching a hospital in a critical condition, they are forced to wander for treatment, which reduces the chances of receiving timely care. The lack of coordination during referrals is clearly evident.
Health experts believe that the main objective of the referral policy was to ensure a seamless transfer of patients from one hospital to another. However, due to the lack of a proper communication system and bed tracking mechanism, this policy has remained limited to paperwork.
The lack of information exchange between hospitals is wasting the precious time of patients. Until hospitals ensure that a bed is available where the patient is being sent, this referral process will continue to remain risky for the patients.
There is a demand for concrete steps to be taken at the administrative level to ensure patients do not have to face unnecessary struggle. Proper implementation of the referral policy is the only way to improve healthcare services.
Ultimately, the negligence being shown during referrals in Lucknow hospitals could prove fatal for patients. The health department needs to rectify this system as soon as possible so that every patient can receive appropriate treatment on time.
