Saharanpur PNB Currency Chest Fraud: Crores in Counterfeit Notes Hidden Within Bundles of Genuine Cash

A major investigation is underway into a 17-crore rupee embezzlement case at the Punjab National Bank currency chest in Saharanpur. An RBI team discovered that counterfeit notes were concealed between layers of genuine currency. The fake notes were reportedly produced using ordinary paper and ink. Authorities have intensified their probe into the sophisticated fraud.

The massive 17-crore rupee embezzlement scandal at the Punjab National Bank (PNB) currency chest in Saharanpur has caused significant concern within the banking sector. On Tuesday, a special team from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) arrived in Saharanpur to conduct a thorough investigation into the irregularities.

Initial findings by the RBI team have revealed a cunning method used to facilitate the fraud. During the inspection, officials discovered a bundle of notes worth five lakh rupees where the perpetrators had placed genuine currency on the top and bottom, while concealing counterfeit notes in the middle.

Questions have also been raised regarding the quality of the fake notes used in this scheme. According to preliminary reports, the counterfeit bills were produced using ordinary ink and standard paper, rather than the specialized materials required for genuine currency.

Such a breach within a highly sensitive area like a bank's currency chest has raised serious concerns regarding internal security protocols. The RBI team is currently working to determine the duration of this activity and identify the employees or officials who may be complicit in the operation.

As reported by the Amar Ujala network, the scope of the investigation has been significantly expanded. Authorities are currently auditing bank records to verify how many other bundles may have been tampered with as part of the total 17-crore rupee shortfall.

At present, a detailed response from the bank administration and relevant authorities is awaited. The true scale of the scandal and the subsequent actions taken against those involved will only be clarified following the submission of the RBI team's final report.
