Waste disposal centers built at a cost of crores in Hathras lie in ruins, garbage piles persist in villages

Waste disposal centers built in Hathras district at a cost of over 40 crore rupees to keep villages clean have fallen into disrepair due to lack of maintenance. Established in 445 out of 462 gram panchayats, these centers have themselves turned into heaps of garbage, raising questions about the success of the cleanliness campaign in rural areas.

In Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh, the significant funds spent in the name of cleanliness are failing to benefit the villagers. According to a report by Amar Ujala, Resource Recovery Centers (RRC) were constructed to make village panchayats garbage-free. The government had spent over 40 crore rupees on the establishment of these facilities.

According to the data, there are 462 gram panchayats in Hathras district. Out of these, waste disposal centers were set up in 445 panchayats. The primary objective of these centers was to ensure the proper disposal of waste generated in villages to prevent filth. However, the current situation is that these centers have lost their utility.

Due to a lack of supervision and proper management, these centers have now become hubs of garbage themselves. In places where waste was supposed to be processed, piles of trash are now rotting. The dilapidated state of these centers at the local level has exposed the claims made under the cleanliness mission.

Villagers state that since the construction of these centers, no attention was paid to their maintenance. Over time, the structures deteriorated, and the waste management process came to a complete halt. This is directly impacting the cleanliness standards in the rural areas.

Large-scale plans were formulated at the administrative level for the construction of these centers, but the ground reality is quite the opposite. Despite spending crores of rupees, the problem of garbage in the villages remains unchanged.

According to the Amar Ujala report, the current condition of these centers is concerning. If steps for their repair and operational management are not taken in time, this government investment will prove to be entirely futile.

At present, no concrete information has emerged regarding the renovation of these centers or plans for their future. Villagers are still waiting for a proper system for waste disposal.
