The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has officially commenced its two-week online short-term internship program for September 2026 at the Manav Adhikar Bhawan in New Delhi. Out of over 1,000 applicants, 100 university-level students from various academic backgrounds have been shortlisted for this initiative.
During the inaugural session, NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian addressed the interns, urging them to reflect on the core objectives of the internship. He emphasized that the program would achieve its true purpose only when the students begin to perceive and analyze society through the lens of human rights.
NHRC member Justice (Dr.) Vidhyut Ranjan Sarangi highlighted that practical experience is essential for applying human rights values at every stage of life. He advised the interns to look beyond theoretical knowledge and focus on gaining real-world experience.
Member Vijaya Bharati Sayani encouraged the students to move beyond the textbook understanding of law and work with sensitivity at the grassroots level. She stated that constitutional values such as justice, equality, and liberty should not be confined to the preamble but must be integrated into daily life.
Secretary General Shri Piyush Goyal described human rights as a broad and nuanced field, calling upon the interns to explore its diverse dimensions. He inspired the students to contribute towards strengthening human dignity.
Outlining the structure of the program, Joint Secretary Smt. Sidingpui Chhakchhuak explained that approximately 30 lectures will be conducted over the two-week period. These sessions will feature senior government officials, academicians, civil society representatives, and subject matter experts.
During the internship, students will also have the opportunity to participate in virtual tours to understand the operations and challenges of institutions such as police stations and Tihar Jail. This experience is designed to help them gain insight into ground-level challenges and the implementation of human rights.
This program provides a platform where students not only learn about the law but also understand their responsibilities toward society. The NHRC's initiative is a significant step toward preparing the youth to become informed citizens and advocates for human rights.
