Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Reaffirms India's Support for Peace and Stability in Myanmar

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla welcomed a parliamentary delegation from Myanmar, stating that India remains a strong supporter of peace and stability in the neighboring nation. He expressed appreciation for the progress made toward national reconciliation and assured that India would continue to be a reliable partner in this process. The delegation is currently in India for a capacity-building program organized by PRIDE.
The delegation is led by Dr. Pwint San, Chairperson of the International Relations Committee of the Myanmar Parliament. Mr. Birla highlighted the ancient and deep-rooted ties between the two nations, strengthened by a shared civilizational heritage and Buddhist connections. He noted that Myanmar holds a significant place in India's Act East, Neighborhood First, and Indo-Pacific policies.
The Speaker emphasized that the two countries share comprehensive strategic relations covering politics, security, defense, trade, and connectivity. He asserted that India has consistently stood by Myanmar during times of need and has been among the first countries to provide humanitarian assistance.
Regular high-level meetings between the leadership of both nations have further solidified bilateral ties. Mr. Birla stated that India is prepared to share its experiences regarding parliamentary procedures, rules, and democratic traditions to help Myanmar build strong and inclusive democratic institutions.
Referring to the recent elections in Myanmar, he noted that the polls held in three phases between December 2025 and January 2026 were highly significant. The introduction of proportional representation and electronic voting machines for the first time marked a major milestone in Myanmar's electoral process.
In conclusion, Mr. Birla expressed hope that this visit would foster meaningful dialogue and deepen parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.
